Hohloma is an ancient Russian folk handicraft, appeared in 17th century in Zavolzhie. At first, the word Hohloma meant the name one of the trade villages. Handcrafters from the nearest villages brought there their works. That was the time of Russian revival, which came after severe Tatar-Mongol yoke, time of temples and churches renew. The local forests gave shelter to pagans and peasants, which flew from their owners. By then that region was very poor, so folk handicrafts became the new source of surviving for the local people. The new handicraft united ancient traditions of local people and refugees, especially pagans. The folk handicraft developed continuously. It was already in the end of 19th century when hohloma became very popular in each Russian or abroad fair. After unbelievable success at the International exhibition in Paris, export of hohloma raised harshly to many countries. The best buyers were trade firms from Germany, England, France and India. By that time hohloma became so popular and profitable that there got appeared imitations. One of such examples can be counted a story of one German, who based his business on selling wooden spoons hohloma alike. At the beginning of the 20th century all the folk handicrafts declined, because of the World War and civil war in Russia. It was because of no work handcrafters had they stopped their business. In Soviet Union hohloma got its second birth, new generation of masters came. In 1971 (the year of my birth!) some masters from Semenov town (nearest town of motherland of hohloma) founded a firm of art drawing. Try to imagine. There is a full technological circle from startto finish with lots different operations. Wonder creating is going at our view. A half done things of birch and lime tree are being covered by lacquer and drawn. The ancient art has its own secrets. For example, for drawing is used brushes, made only from squirrel's tails; paint that is used only organic.
